The Passion

The Passion is a huge musical event about the last hours of Jesus’ life, his passion and his resurrection. During a big live pop event, prominent characters from the Bible like Jesus, Mary and Judas sing well-known songs by Dutch pop bands in different scenes.

The main reason for choosing Groningen was that the city is young in terms of population, rich in culture, has a beautiful historic centre and has organised an ambitious programme of events for many years. According to the organisers of The Passion, Groningen offers a wonderful setting in which to translate the ancient story about Jesus’ last hours to 2014.

Previous editions of The Passion have taken place in Gouda, Rotterdam and The Hague. The 2013 edition in The Hague attracted 20,000 visitors and over 3 million people watched the event on television. In 2013, the Passion was awarded the National Event Prize for being the best City Promotion Event.
